Jill Butterbaugh was born in Southern California and started her art career painting billboards for a record store in Hollywood. She moved to Hawaii in 1979, and now works from her Kailua Studio. Jill received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from University of Hawaii.
She has attended many Ateliers – intensive art workshops, each consisting of over 200 hours of instruction. These workshops focus on teaching fine art techniques in both drawing and painting. Ateliers combine formal academic training with a heavy influence from the Old Masters of the Renaissance.
From Still Life to Landscapes and Portraits, her paintings are mostly completed in oil, using brushes. Jill’s early work was influenced by her years as a photo realistic painter but after attending a Plein Air workshop in Southern France, she is now exploring palette knife paintings. Using only a palette knife gives a textural, painterly quality to her work, in addition to conveying a sense of spontaneity and movement.
Jill’s work is in many private homes in Hawaii, the Continental U.S. and Europe.
Jill began this portrait with a rough sketch of the model in burnt umber.
This is followed by the model being fully rendered in burnt umber, then completed in full color with oils. This was painted in the Atelier Studio at Windward Community College in Kaneohe, Hawaii in the Summer of 2007.
Total time to complete the portrait was approximately 15 hours.
